beyond the veil

Having been settled since the 18th century, San Antonio has a reputation for being one of the most haunted cities in America. SPIRIT Coffee will be inspired by this concept without feeling kitschy or costumed.

The most important element of SPIRIT is the ghosts themselves – that is, the large-scale, black-and-white art* that quietly observes the patrons. These pieces focus on human forms in shadowy contrast and are meant to evoke a subtle, spooky feeling without being actually scary. On the opposite wall, a quote from the podcast “Lore” – a personal favorite.

In this space, I wanted to play with elements we associate with ghost stories: Transparency, glow, darkness and form. This neon Edgar Allan Poe quote set against a white wall not only provides contrast against the concrete floor and deep charcoal walls, it reinforces the theme. Ghost stools (did I have a choice?) against the window take the notion one step further.

This concept was created for my Digital Visualization class at Saddleback College and is purely theoretical.
